Chapter 145: Abandoned Hospital
Chapter 145: Abandoned Hospital
Soon, they reached the pharmacy corridors, clearing up the zombies inside. When the zombies were dealt with, they finally had the time to study the area, hoping for the best.
But it was better than they had thought—the shelves were still filled!
There were plenty of antibiotics, basic medicine, bandages, and the like.
"They are all still in good condition!" One said, looking closely at the items.
"The expiry dates are still within a few years," a soldier said, "The warehouse should have even better stocks."
They happily took everything they could carry, with soldiers carrying large suitcases that moved silently.
However, in the middle of their clearing up the pharmacy, they suddenly heard a new noise in one of the storages.
The soldiers were quick to aim their weapons, and the civilians flinched, glaring at the door defensively.
The door soon opened to reveal two emanciated people. They looked so gray and weak that they could be mistaken for zombies, but—based on the lucidity of their eyes and stuttered breathing and gasps—the team could tell they were human.
These people obviously hadn’t eaten for days though, so the dutiful soldiers quickly took out easy to digest biscuits and a bit of water for the two, which they devoured as if their lives depended on it.
Perhaps it did.
The others, while the soldiers and a few others continued to clean up, couldn’t help but observe the two new rescues.
It was a civilian and a male nurse, judging by their clothing, and they should’ve been there at least for a couple of days.
The nurse was the slightly muscular type, the one that was often called with troublesome patients. While the civilian was a man in his late fifties and head filled with white hair.
This civilian was still an acquaintance, and Khalifa couldn’t help but call him out. "Mr. Bo?"
The old man flinched, not moving, before raising his head with furrowed eyebrows.
His withered brown eyes met with vibrant blue ones and he gaped, expression brightening almost instantaneously. "Ms. Khalifa!"
Her peers, except Mira, saw the respectful attitude of the man and were curious. Mira was just frowning, wondering what else she was hiding.
He quickly finished up his little food and water. As soon as he did, the old man stood up to greet her with a smile on his face.
Unfortunately, they could not speak much, as the soldiers had come back and asked them to get a move on.
It was the nurse—Nurse Kiko—who guided them to the storage and warehouse. Using the previous strategies of using their numbers and the ’terrain’, they safely reached these treasure troves without a loss.
They got their survival tools, IV kits, and the like. The storage basement also had a lot of untouched equipment like defibrillators, and oxygen tanks. There were even generators.
They naturally couldn’t carry everything, but it was enough.
It was far more than what they expected to get, in fact.
Khalifa also took advantage to get a few. She had these, still the top-of-the-line models, but nothing was ever too much in her opinion. As long as she had the space for it, she would get some.
They re-locked the storage areas before heading back out, hoping to secure it for future missions.
In the locked storage room, they placed some tools they couldn’t take with them. The soldiers would return here with a new team in the future, once they got more manpower and stabilized the base.
Settling their future stock with smiles on their faces, the team then went ahead to finally get back home.
But… as smoothly as it had gone so far, it naturally couldn’t be smooth the whole time.
When they exited the hospital to go back to their trucks and cars, the zombies attracted to their area by their noise had already grown several folds.
There was also the fact that there were still a lot of them compared to Mira’s dreams, which ironically attracted much more zombies than it should’ve.
"Oh my goodness!"
"There are thousands! How can we handle this?!"
"Calm down! It will only get more difficult if you panic!" Ryo yelled, taking out his gun, shooting several zombies in their way.
With his signal, the group began to move forward, tense but ready to fight.
Soldiers formed protective barriers around the civilians as the first line of defense. Of course, with Khalifa and Jacob watching their backs like hawks, none of the civilians dared to take advantage and not work at all.
As such, despite the number of zombies, they managed to hold off for a while.
Only for a while however, because there really were quite a number of zombies—there should still be a thousand remaining (and growing in number), and there were only over a hundred of them.
At this point Khalifa had no choice but to use her powers to clear a way that was just enough for the cars to go through.
Hundreds of ice picks floated around her, beheading, and everyone gaped at how magical her abilities were.
Something of a path cleared and the soldiers and civilians ran through it as fast as they could, beheading zombies on the side when they had to.
However, there were too many and Khalifa could feel her powers already lose a good portion after a while.
Judging by the growing size of the horde, she may have to over exert herself again if they couldn’t get out soon.
And even that wouldn’t guarantee she could save most of them.
With her help, they managed to reach the gate and get out of the hospital, managing to keep most of the following zombies at bay.
However, no matter how powerful, Khalifa was very near her limits.
Soon, a small group of zombies got past their defenses, taking a few more civilians. Khalifa frowned and was about to create a large ice wall to block them—something that would officially mark the halving of her remaining power.
However, before she had to do so, a wall of earth suddenly appeared on one side of their car and a wall of fire appeared on the other—successfully protecting at least a dozen people from death
However, the attack was so sudden everyone was taken aback. It was only because the soldiers managed to regain composure that the dazed civilians kept their lives.
Anyway, another earth wall erected to protect a student, and a few fireballs blew nearby to kill several zombies that got too close to Khalifa.
"What!!!"
"Where—"
"Holy shiiii—"
This earth wall then tilted and fell down on the zombies, while the fireballs on the other side burned a few more zombies.
There was enough damage done that the zombies were easily handled by the soldiers there.
Khalifa blinked, immediately turning to where the direction of the fireball came from.
Her face brightened like the sun at the sight of two handsome men inside a car, bravely going into the mob towards her.
"Professor! Kaize!"
They’re here!
