Khalifa: Queen in the Apocalypse

Chapter 144: Caveats (Part 2)

Chapter 144: Caveats (Part 2)

Khalifa had a dark expression as she approached the men, who looked at her obsessively, thinking she had rescued them.

What they didn’t know was that she was scolding them for being trash and forcing her to prematurely use her abilities.

She pointed her sword at the men that pushed the woman, their smiling faces quickly morphed to one of terror.

"We clearly warned that burdens are not welcome here." She said, taking down the sword. But they didn’t even have the time to breathe a sigh of relief as a moment later Khalifa lifted her feet, and kicked them all.

She sent them directly to the zombies, and they fell back first. They didn’t even absorb the pain as they were already surrounded by zombies the moment after.

They screamed like slaughtered pigs as they were mauled, and finally—crunch!—they succumbed to their deaths.

This scene was not something anyone had expected.

"What!!"

"Oh my goodness!!!"

"Kyaaaaa!!!"

A few people screamed in terror, looking at Khalifa in shock.

"What the heck!!"

Mira immediately stepped over looking at her with reprimand. However, Jacob stood in front, so she was stopped meters away.

"How could you do that?" Mira asked the silver-haired woman, who just casually combed her hair back, then looked back at her without a care.

Mira was intimidated, but she tried not to show it. She simply looked at her as if waiting for her to explain her actions.

In response, Khalifa crossed her arms and looked at her as if she didn’t have common sense. "I can’t have people who would push people as shields guard my back." She said, "Can you?"

"But… you didn’t have to push them!" Mira said, steadfast with tears, as if she was fighting for what she believed in despite being scared.

"Stop it, Mira." Claire told her, and Laura was silent, unsure what she was thinking.

"That’s not right! A life is a life!"

In her dreams, Claire was hailed as a saintess for her kindness and skills. She wanted that!

Khalifa looked at Mira’s suitors right next to her. "Tell me those words when you stop hiding behind their backs."

"I—"

Mira gripped her fist. Why can’t she ever win? She must get the last word or else she just embarrassed herself.

"How many people are left? You can’t kill anyone just because you wanted to!"

This time, Khalifa didn’t need to answer her as the woman she rescued stepped in.

Although Joana was unkempt and dirty, she was much older than Mira, and hence had some sort of authority.

"She saved my life," She said to Mira as if it explained everything, looking her in the eye, trying to explain calmly but Mira just felt humiliated instead.

"I’ve been fighting hard while they push people around. The world can no longer afford such evil."

She then turned to Khalifa and bowed. "Thank you."

Khalifa nodded and smiled at the woman, before turning to Mira.

"You are right, there are so few of us left," She said with that sultry voice of hers, "It’s better for everyone that such scum are gone."

They stopped at the gate of the hospital, attracting a small hoard that they had to kill their way through.

Clearing out the way, the team went past the gate to eventually see the edifice.

It was a four-story building with wide floor areas and plain-colored walls. Its whole mass just standing there, hauntingly still.

It had only been a week, but it was already a bit dilapidated. More prominently, it reeked of death and hopelessness.

They chose an entrance with lesser zombies, courtesy of Mira, which somehow helped push back her embarrassment earlier.

Khalifa didn’t comment on anything. Regardless of what Mira’s goals and motives were, she was saving a lot of people at the moment, so she decided to give a bit more face later on.

The soldiers were divided into two, one team comprising two-thirds of their numbers. This group walked up front while the rest remained at the back to guard the rear.

Although they were ordered not to die for the civilians, they were still tasked to protect in a certain capacity.

They called civilians for the mission to give them another chance at a decent life, also as additional force.

It was also to see who they could recruit in the military to join their forces.

They definitely did not call civilians on this mission to find cannon fodder.

The people cautiously approached the entrance of the door, killing the zombies that came their way. They created a decent wall of flesh, making sure no one was bitten.

As they did so, they tried to use cold weapons as much as possible in order to minimize the approaching zombies and save up on ammo.

They entered the hospital and blocked the zombies outside the door, with the front group killing the zombies that came from inside.

The zombies at this time were still slow and stiff, and one simply needed a bit of strength and courage to deal with them.

Compared with their number and the limited area, the zombies that could attack them inside the halls were not many, and the journey was relatively smooth.

However, the smell of rot was enclosed and stagnant. It had gotten particularly strong in such a cloistered space and a lot of people soon couldn’t take it anymore and vomited.

Surprisingly, Claire was among those people. Mira rushed to her, hiding the smile and sneer in her eyes. "Are you okay?"

Claire nodded and wiped her mouth, frowning at how lethargic she was feeling. However, the fight was ongoing so she didn’t have the time to ponder on this.

Khalifa, who was nearby, couldn’t help but comment a bit. Claire looked very pale, very unlike the brave girl from earlier. She looked sickly even, but she was a couple of meters away and was guarding this side so she couldn’t approach her.

"Be careful." She just told her in the end. "Gather yourself before facing stronger enemies. Lest we lose you, too."

Claire’s eyes warmed, but it stung Mira’s eyes.

She hated Claire, sure, but seeing her so dependent on another for friendship really gritted in her nerves!
