Liang Chen thought about it and suddenly felt very unsettled. He stood up from the sofa, mused for a moment, then picked up his car keys and clothes and headed downstairs.
Liang Chen drove fast. As he pondered on how to approach Shen Liangnian once he found him, he arrived at the base of Shen Liangnian’s building.
Through the car window, Liang Chen glanced at the residential building where only a few lights were bustling, then opened the car door and got out.
He entered the building, rode the elevator with familiarity, arrived at Shen Liangnian’s door, raised his hand, and rang the doorbell.
Through the door, he could faintly hear the melodious ring of the bell from inside.
Liang Chen stood outside with a cold face, impatiently pressing the doorbell again after the bell’s sound ceased.
He found his heart beating fiercely. What if Shen Liangnian wasn’t home? Would it indeed prove that Jing Haohao had eloped with him?
Just as these thoughts raced through Liang Chen’s mind, the door was pulled open from inside.
Liang Chen lifted his head to see Shen Liangnian, looking somewhat haggard in his pajamas, staring back at him in surprise.
Liang Chen felt somewhat relieved. He looked at Shen Liangnian calmly and asked, “May I come in?”
Shen Liangnian, unaware of why Liang Chen would pay him a sudden late-night visit, stepped aside to allow entrance.
Liang Chen hurried in. As he changed his shoes, he lifted his head to take a look around Shen Liangnian’s lavish house, but found no sign of Jing Haohao.
While Shen Liangnian was in the kitchen making coffee, Liang Chen raised his hand and pushed open the door to Shen Liangnian’s bedroom. It was empty, devoid of any presence.
His emotions were complicated, Liang Chen couldn’t discern whether he was relieved or frightened.
He both hoped he could find Shen Liangnian here and feared Jing Haohao truly was with Shen Liangnian.
Shen Liangnian, carrying a cup of coffee, emerged from the kitchen to find Liang Chen standing at his door, peering inside. He furrowed his brows and asked in a detached voice, “What can I do for you?”
Liang Chen turned his head to glance at Shen Liangnian but said nothing as he slowly returned to the couch.
Shen Liangnian sat first and motioned to the couch in front of him. “Let’s sit and talk.”
Liang Chen sat, his gaze fixed on Shen Liangnian. After a while, he finally asked, “Did you see her yesterday?”
It took Shen Liangnian a moment to realize who “her” referred to in Liang Chen’s question. He smiled, a layer of sorrow reflecting on his face, and admitted directly, “Yes, I saw Haohao yesterday.”
As Liang Chen looked at the calm demeanor of Shen Liangnian and heard him call “Haohao” in such an intimate tone, he clenched his teeth, suppressing the jealousy and anger fermenting inside him. His patience had run thin and he bluntly asked, “What did you tell her yesterday afternoon? Where is she now? Where have you hidden her?”
Shen Liangnian was taken aback by the flurry of questions from Liang Chen. After a moment, he regained his composure, his eyes calm and serene. He chuckled lightly at Liang Chen and said, “Chen, are you joking with me?”
“I’m not joking with you!” Liang Chen’s demeanor slowly started to show signs of hostility.
