Liang Chen paused while fixing his shirt cuff.

Nanny Lin couldn’t read any emotions from Liang Chen’s face, so she gathered her courage and continued, “Miss Jing rarely steps out of the house these days. She either stays in her bedroom or hides in the studio. She doesn’t seem right. Although she appears like a normal person going about her day, sometimes, she doesn’t respond when spoken to. When she does respond, she just lifts her head and stares blankly. It’s as if she’s entirely immersed in her world. Mr. Chen, if this continues, it might not end well. Miss Jing’s health isn’t great to begin with, and she might collapse at any time.”

Liang Chen felt a lump forming in his throat. After a few moments, he swallowed, regained his composure, and nodded at Nanny Lin, saying, “Take good care of her. I have some urgent work at the office. I’m leaving now.”

“Yes.”

Liang Chen walked towards the elevator. When the door was about to close, he looked back at Nanny Lin as though something had come to mind and said, “If she needs anything, remember to give me a call.”

“Understood, Mr. Chen.”

Liang Chen then closed the elevator, went downstairs, got into the car, and drove to the office.

Nanny Lin had been with Liang Chen for many years and had always understood the implications behind his words. So, from that day on, she would call Liang Chen every morning and afternoon, reporting on what Jing Haohao had done and eaten at home.

The contents of the reports were quite monotonous, either mentioning that Jing Haohao had eaten too little or had slept for a long time. But no matter how busy Liang Chen was, as long as he saw Nanny Lin’s call, he would pick it up as soon as possible. Even if Nanny Lin kept repeating that Jing Haohao’s appetite was getting worse, he listened with close attention.

Ever since that night, Liang Chen would come home every evening, but his communication with Jing Haohao was almost non-existent.

One night, Liang Chen woke up in the middle of his sleep and did not see Jing Haohao by his side. Knowing she wouldn’t leave the bedroom, he quietly got up from bed and found her on the balcony.

Despite the chill, she was standing outside in her sleepwear, exposed to the cold wind.

Liang Chen stood behind her, looking at her frail silhouette. It felt like a painful stab in the heart, leaving him breathless.

Liang Chen stood for a while, but Jing Haohao didn’t notice him. Around four in the morning, he returned to bed first but found himself unable to fall asleep.

As the sky was beginning to brighten outside, Jing Haohao quietly slid open the balcony doors and came in.

Her movements were very delicate as if she was afraid of being discovered. She creeped into the other side of the bed and quietly laid down.

Liang Chen kept his eyes closed till everything was quiet around him. He then opened his eyes to see her laying far from him, curled up, occupying just a corner of the large bed. From his perspective, she looked particularly petite and pitiful.

He had noticed her growing silence all these days. Initially, he thought it was a result of their quarrel and that things would go back to normal after a while. But now, seeing Jing Haohao in this state, he was quite unnerved.
