…
At nine o’clock on Christmas Eve morning, Qiao Wennuan made her ninety-seventh attempt to call Shen Liangnian, at last, it was the first time that Shen Liangnian picked up.
“Nuan, what’s wrong?”
“Liangnian, why haven’t you been taking my calls lately?”
Shen Liangnian ignored the hint of aggravation and sadness in Qiao Wennuan’s voice, replying in an indifferent tone: “Nuan, it happens that I also wanted to speak with you today. Let’s meet at the café below the Four Seasons Hotel.”
…
Shen Liangnian had arranged to meet Qiao Wennuan at ten, but she arrived at nine forty-five.
Since it was still morning, the café was rather quiet, with just a few idle waitstaff and no other patrons.
The café was spacious, with tall potted plants separating the tables, and Qiao Wennuan had chosen the most secluded spot in the back.
The winter sunlight, now just lazily hanging in the sky, filtered through the leaves of the potted plants, casting dappled light and shadows upon the table before Qiao Wennuan.
Shen Liangnian was always punctual. At ten o’clock, Qiao Wennuan saw through the glass window as Shen Liangnian’s car slowly pulled up to the café entrance. The tall and handsome man got out of the car and disappeared into the entrance. Less than ten minutes later, the familiar sound of his footsteps echoed behind her.
During the two years she had known Shen Liangnian, Qiao Wennuan had waited for him many times. Each time she heard his footsteps, she would joyfully turn around to throw herself into his arms, juxtaposing flirty whining with the earnest question, “Liangnian, why are you only just arriving now?”
But this time, Qiao Wennuan kept her back to Shen Liangnian, not turning around. And even in the corner of her eyes, a sour tear was welling up.
When Shen Liangnian sat down across from her, Qiao Wennuan quickly lifted her hand to wipe the corner of her eye, offering him a brilliant smile before saying, “You’ve arrived?”
Shen Liangnian’s face was expressionless, his gaze clear as always. He nodded at Qiao Wennuan, rang the service bell at his side, picked up the menu, and asked, “What would you like to drink?”
“The same as always.”
Without saying a word, Shen Liangnian simply closed the menu once the waiter came over. “Two cups of mocha,” he ordered.
After a pause, Shen Liangnian looked up and asked, “You haven’t had breakfast yet, have you? Would you like something to eat?”
Qiao Wennuan nodded.
“Two sandwiches, a vegetable salad, and a fruit salad.”
“Alright, sir.” The waiter noted the order respectfully and turned to leave.
About a moment later, someone pushed a food cart over, serving everything that Shen Liangnian had ordered.
“Serve yourself at leisure, sir, miss,” said the waiter, again offering a respectful bow before leaving. Then, the surroundings of Shen Liangnian and Qiao Wennuan sunk into silence.
After a while, Shen Liangnian pushed the food toward Qiao Wennuan, saying, “Eat first, we’ll talk afterwards.”
The sunlight outside the window scattered across Shen Liangnian’s eyes, making them gleam even more brightly.
Qiao Wennuan looked at him, but she didn’t raise a hand to take up her knife and fork.
Only after taking a bite of his sandwich did Shen Liangnian notice Qiao Wennuan’s lack of response. He furrowed his brow, asking, “What’s the matter? Not to your liking?”
