Chapter 97: The Truth
Chapter 97: The Truth
"Hmm, now let me ask you this.....is the boy dead?" The level 4 warlock, Bartholomew, asked Leon with eyes filled with seriousness.
The entire Dalriss household was sure that the boy was still alive, but what Leon had just said was a process painful enough to kill whomsoever was being operated on.
"No, he’s dead...he died screaming" Leon replied with calm. It wasn’t like the warlocks liked the mages anyway….they wouldn’t sell him out, at least. And if they tried, he could easily disappear again.
"Ohhhhh" Bartholomew sighed in disappointment. Leon was still a kid at the end of the day, he only saw so far ahead in the future. If not, he would have kept the boy alive. Then they would ransom him for resources from the dalriss family.
In fact given the right circumstances they could even set up an ambush and kill the marquee himself. So he couldn’t help but feel disappointed that Anan was dead.
Naturally, he didn’t know that Leon was lying, and that Anan was alive and not so healthy in one of the dungeons in badurs gates.
"Do you know why we’re in this position?" Bartholomew asked Leon causally after getting over the fact that Anan was dead.
"This position? I don’t understand" Leon looked confused. The question was just too vague.
"Hunted, enslaved…degraded to something worse than an animal" Bartholomew responded...
"Ohhhh, that’s what you mean" Leon, coming to a realization, Leon shook his head indicating that he didn’t actually know. Yeah, there was the politically motivated hatred between warlocks and mages, but was that enough to call for the genocide of an entire race of people?
No!! There had to be another reason the higher ups weren’t telling them.
"First answer me this...do you know what comes after the stage of level 4?" Bartholomew asked.
"Level 5?" Leon responded. That was common sense really, the levels in this world went from level 1 to 9. There were no special levels, as far he knew at least.
"Ah, you’re technically right. But what does it really mean to be a level 5 warlock or mage? " After a brief pause, Bartholomew continued.....
"Please enlighten me…" with a slight bow, Leon requested. It seemed like the information Bartholomew was about to give him would be a very important one. He wouldn’t pass up that opportunity.
"The difference between level 4 and level 5. It is like the difference between a mortal and one who has transcended mortality.....
The difference between a mortal and an immortal"
From level 1 all the way to level 4…the word immortal had never been mentioned once…at least Leon had never heard it in this world.....this was because this word was too special.
The word was used for legends.....the ability to cause seas to rage and the sky to turn black.....the ability to cause earthquakes like a divine being punishing mortals…. Immortals were like gods!!!
Though this was the most eye-catching attributes of an Immortal, The most eye catching attributes of immortals were their life spans…with all the power they wielded they could also live for a very long time…. The longest recorded was 10 generations.
The birth of an immortal in any family would bring about its reign over a region for at least 1, 000 years.
"Wow" Leon’s gaze was brimming with clear shock. But this was of course in facade. In his Past life, he had met a plethora of people claiming to be immortal because they were powerful…. Leon once believed this to be true as well. But the more he fought, the more he got stronger…. The more he came to understand that power did not equal immortality.
"But.....what does that have to do with us?" after a brief moment, Leon asked. The talk of immortality and level 5 didn’t seem necessary, actually.
"You’re not that bright, huh?" with a condescending smirk, Bartholomew asked Leon. What he was trying to say was quite plain in his eyes, and he believed he didn’t need to spell it out.
"A warlock is about to breakthrough" Liana suddenly spoke from the side, causing the atmosphere of the room to go down.
Yes, the reason the mages were trying to end all warlock powers in Eldoria was because the warlocks were about to give birth to a level 5 being.
Immediately they got news that this was happening, they mobilized every power they had and in one night they slaughtered numerous warlocks, but they couldn’t get to that one warlock. so they turned their attention to the rest in hoops of him rearing his head, allowing them to take his life.
"Ahhhhh" Leon was stunned. It looked like there was a lot going on in the underground of the one City that you didn’t know…. Basically, this place was a ticking time bomb.
If either side succeeded, the other would definitely cease to exist.
"Wait a minute, shouldn’t the duan family have a level 5 mage at least ?" Leon didn’t understand. The duan royal family has been in charge of eldoria for as far as eldoria’s history went. There had never been a Kingdom here before eldoria.
How were they able to create a Kingdom Here Without A level 5 mage?
"They do of course, but barely" after a brief pause, Bartholomew continued.
" The one from the duan royal family has lived for too long, honestly, she’s basically a vegetable at this point."
Bartholomew explained that. Not only was she vegetable, the fact that she was a level 5 mage was based on pure luck. She had eaten a treasure and it mage her skyrocket to level 5.
"Then why haven’t the warlocks tried to kill her already?"
A level 5 mage born from a lucky Encounter, plus she was basically a vegetable now. There was no better target…. If the warlocks wanted, why couldn’t they just kill her and make the playing field even instead of waiting.
"..."
Leon’s words were met with an awkward silence.
Kill a level 5 mage? What kind of thinking was that?
Leon was proposing they kill what some would call a god in this world.
"Hehehe, let’s forget how absurd that sounds….you wouldn’t be able to make it one step into her champers before you’re killed....." Bartholomew stood up and walked over to a side of the room where a window was placed.
"I can’t of course... I’m a level 2 warlock, but if a few level 4 warlocks laid siege to the castle....."
Before Léon could complete his sentence, he was cut off by Liana.
"They would undoubtedly die."
"Why? It only takes one well-timed attack to kill a vegetable, no matter how powerful" Leon was genuinely confused….he didn’t believe they were dumb, but he wanted to know why they hadn’t attacked yet.
"You seem to be curious about everything, kid... What’s I can say to you though is….you have a higher chance of leaving that dreadful Palace alive than even I"
"That place.....is a death trap for anyone who Steps into it." for the first time since he got here, Leon could feel a sense of dread, hopelessness, annoyance from Bartholomew.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
"It’s a treasure? "
Leon frowned. What Bartholomew had just described was a killing machine. The balance was able to shift its halls, leading whomsoever entered onto traps. It was fitted with booby traps that could kill even level 4 warlocks.
It wasn’t like they hadn’t tried, for decades they had been trying….the hatred between the warlocks and the mages was mutual. Each side wanted the other dead, so years ago, a level 4 warlock had a bright idea and went into the Palace at night.
The next day, his body was found tied on the side of the Palace’s outer building.
At first, the warlocks blamed the mages for attacking and flaying their comrade. But when they saw the look of delighted surprise on the eyes of the mages, they came to understand that they weren’t the corporate for this ’crime’
It was the Palace
It was alive
Over the decades, warlocks tried and failed in fact, some were Bartholomew’s friends all of them died in there. Ever since, it was a bit of a taboo topic.
"You now understand, it’s not that we can’t seize that opportunity, it’s just too hard.....hopefully the Golden Griffin clan leader will succeed and enter level 5, then we will all be safe at last"
He had given up so much to stay in Eldoria, he could only hope that it would pay off and as for Leon’s suggestion…. he pushed it to the back of his mind, there was no way he will do something so stupid.
But Leon didn’t seem to be convinced. A treasure could only do so, much, there had to be loopholes, it was created by humans after all.
Leon’s whole goal of coming to duan city wasn’t to save or somehow help the warlocks.
He was here for the Purple Heart eternal flower
