Chapter 90: Unexpected

The silhouette of several figures rushing through the crack in the ceiling appeared.
"Oh my god" in the middle of these silhouettes, the great mage could be seen with a look of horror on his face as he looked down at the bodies in front of him.
50 recruits, The cream of the crop among cold-blooded killers, all laid dead, mutilated before his very eyes. It was an unsettling sight.
"It’s not your fault, Brother Damien" one of the Elders soothed the great mage. Even though they sat side by side right now, most of them were actually his elders. Sometimes they forgot that he was still young and inexperienced in the field of leadership.
"No, I’m at fault here" the great mage shook his head. If he hadn’t insisted that they ramp up the recruitment exercises, the pool wouldn’t have gotten so weak that that Demon could break free.
He thought it was only myth and the statue down below was just a joke from their predecessors. He was so wrong, a sorcerer had been let loose on the world once again, and it was his fault.
"Sigh" Half-moon shook his head and patted the shoulder of the elder who had tried to sooth Damian. He knew it wouldn’t work.
Damien was stubborn, no amount of persuading would let him take their advice unless he realized it himself. It was his greatest flaw but also the reason for his greatest successes.
Damien then descended to where the corpses were being packed up and looked around.
Meanwhile, at the pool’s surface.
"Ahhhh" the recruits in the top 20 slowly made their way out of the pools.
"The rest are coming" one of the officials pointed out, causing the great mage to look over. There the top 20 slowly emerged from inside the pools and among them a shocking scene Could be observed.
4 had broken through to level 2!!!
One was Ember, obviously, the most prepared among them all. She was able to break through on the 3 day.
The second was surprisingly the blade Demon. The kid who depended on a magic treasure to fight actually broke through? Was that some sort of luck or something?
The third was unfortunately not ghost face. The great mage’s protégé had failed to breakthrough, instead it was the kid with the steel manipulation magic.
And last but not the least was Leon. Other than his roughed up clothes, Leon emitted the mana of a level 2 mage.
As a Warlock, he didn’t need to comprehend mana. It came to him naturally when he made headway with his power leveling.
It was the law of nature.
"This....is good" looking at the four, the great mage couldn’t help but smile bitterly, it was like he had sacrificed 50 young lives to give birth to 4 talents able to break through on their first try in the pool.
"From today, you four will have the title ’honored’" the great mage said while looking at the guys in front of him.
It wasn’t an easy feat to be a level 2 mage.
Level 2 mages were the elites of the kingdom, the true arm of any organization. There were an abundance of level 1 mages that couldn’t reach level 2 without years of training reaching their 40s to 50s, but at such a young age and on their first try, these guys broke through.
Whether they liked it or not, talents like these would be the future of their organization.
With what had just happened, the need for future leaders of the company was pounded into Damien’s heart.
If he were ever to die, or if the company were to be wiped away, they would need legacy talents that would take the helm.
He would train these guys to be those talents. At least that was what he hoped for....

Two weeks later.
After the incident at the tempering event, the great mage ordered a mandate of silence from everyone present. They were not to speak of the incident to anyone.
A sorcerer being let loose on the world would bring about a lot of panic and pointing fingers from the other powers of the Kingdom, especially the royalty.
He wanted to settle things within the faceless mercenary company. All elders were activated to hunt down the sorcerer. But up until now, there was no news from them.

The sound of horse hoofs hitting the round sounded on the streets of duan city as a luxurious carriage made its way down the streets of duan city at incredible speeds.
After gaining the title ’honored’ Leon and the other 4 were given a cash prize and the opportunity to gain a higher status in the company. This didn’t include an oath, but it demanded a lot of responsibilities.
To this, Leon refused. He didn’t want any responsibility. In fact, he didn’t want the honored title if it meant he would take an oath, and he said this firmly to Half-moon.
Apart from him, only one other took Leon’s stance, and it was surprisingly the blade Demon.
"Slow down, man" outside the carriage, a young man shouted at the top of his voice.
"Ignore him" inside the carriage, Leon commanded the carriage rider. Ever since the tempering event, the blade Demon had been popping out of nowhere, challenging him to fight.
It was very annoying, and he didn’t like being pestered, but the guy didn’t want to give up.
"Yes sire," gunta whipped the horses pulling the carriage causing them to increase in speed.
"Fucker!!!!" The blade Demon grew incensed upon watching Leon’s Carriage pick up speed. He wanted to redeem himself, but Ember didn’t want to fight him. She wanted to fight Leon instead, so he thought defeating Leon would make her fight against him.
But Leon refused adamantly for 2 weeks, citing that he didn’t have the time. He wouldn’t take that kind of disrespect laying down.

The horses ran through the streets of duan city, moving from corner to corner, from alleyway to alleyway. Trying to lose the blade Demon, and finally, it did.
Gunta was able to pass by a moving carriage at the right time and slow down the blade Demon before entering the market.
A few minutes later and they reached a mining company with the insignia jade tools mining company.
This was Peri’s place.
"Haaa, brother badur, long time no see" one of the guards at the gate walked forward to greet Leon as soon as he stepped down from his carriage.
"Hehe, I see you’re doing well for yourself" Seeing the carriage the guard smiled and winked at Leon. To afford such a carriage, Leon must have made it big recently.
"You jest, where is Carlson" Leon chuckled and asked. They had worked together for 1 week, it seemed like a small period of time, but there was this comrade in their heart after such a short while that couldn’t be easily ignored.
"I’m right here" all of a sudden, Carlson walked out from inside the gate to where Leon stood. However once he did his facial expression took a U-turn.
He was a minute ago feeling smug and proud as a few days ago he had been able to break through to level 2. It was monumental, so he felt like showing off to Leon.
Little did he know that Leon too had broken through to level 2.
"Huh? What’s wrong?" The guard from before saw the look of shock on Carlson face and couldn’t help but frown.
Was something wrong.
"Hehe, change is constant brother Carlson" Leon walked forward and patted Carlson on the back. When he was at the peak of level 1, Leon was at the beginner stage. Now he was at level 2 and Leon was on the same level as him.
Leon was either a monstrous talent or he was just not working hard enough.
Carlson considered the latter to be the case.
"Let’s go on in" Leon said before walking forward into the shop.
He had received a message from Carlson that Peri needed his help for another job and was willing to pay him double. Leon happy agreed and made his way here.

The door to Peri’s office opened and Leon entered, followed by Arian and Carlson.
"Just the man I’ve been looking for" Peri stood up and greeted Leon.
But for some reason, Leon didn’t respond. His eyes remained glued to the person seated opposite her.
"Oh? This is a friend of mine, Jamie. This Is the mercenary I told you about. He’s efficient" Peri introduced.
But her friend didn’t respond to her either, he just slowly stood up and stepped towards Leon.
As he was doing so, his face morphed into a faceless one and reached forward, grabbing Leon by the neck in a second.
This person wasn’t her friend. No, this was the sorcerer Leon had mistakenly freed.
—Boom!!!
In but a matter of seconds, Leon was pressed to the wall, and Arian and Carlson responded by unsheathing their weapons and aiming it at the sorcerer.
"Are you going to kill us all?" The sorcerer said to Leon. He wasn’t bothered by Arian and Carlson’s weapons.
Above them, a massive gate had formed and was aiming at him.
Leon didn’t hesitate for one minute to activate Badur’s Gate.
