Chapter 180: Surgery
Chapter 180: Surgery
Several hundred meters above the ground, A Few Hours Prior
The sun was high that day and the horizon was particularly blinding, but it lit up Hugo’s heart.
The blinding light seemed like it was there to promise his imminent reunion with the love of his life.
The deafening thuds of the helicopter blades echoed in their ears, but it synced with his rapidly beating heart.
As he did every minute, he looked down on his phone to see how much farther she was.
It was just that… there was no change from a minute ago. He frowned, realizing that there was no bar on the Universal phone.
Hugo growled in annoyance and looked at Yoyo, one of the two henchmen he brought in (not including Jojo and Sid).
"The satellites are all down already?"
The big man looked at his own universal phone. "Apparently so."
"Damn it!"
The young Jojo looked at them back and forth and sighed worriedly.
"I wonder how Ms. Khalifa is…" Jojo mumbled wistfully, as the wind at their high altitude hit his face.
Beside him, Sid frowned, also very worried.
Hugo massaged his temple and opened the map (which was now frozen due to the lack of signal).
"We have no choice but to manually map their location then," he said and Yoyo looked over to analyze the situation with him.
"They stayed for a while at the armory, but they were heading back West, likely returning to the base they stayed in before."
"It’s been so long, I wonder why Khalifa stayed there," Sid mumbled beside them, referring to her extended stay in an inferior base.
Hugo also wondered about this. Knowing her, she’d have gone to her island days ago.
In fact, it wasn’t that Hugo didn’t think to ask every time he called her.
It was just that every time his call was answered, there was always a dick inside her. How could he concentrate?
Anyway, they followed their path in their helicopter, which wasn’t hard because of the piles of zombies they encountered along the way.
Another sign that they were in the right direction was the way the corpses were handled.
There were boulders and earth cracks as well as burnt corpses in sporadic areas. He knew there was earth and fire (that bastard Kaize) power users in her team. He heard even Kylo awakened.
But the fact that bothered him the most was that all her other men were with her all this time! She must have been satisfied every night. How could she still remember him?
This wouldn’t do, he must push his presence in front of her as soon as possible!
What if she already forgot how his cock felt like?!
"Joel, Hurry!"
"..."
Although they were already going at the vehicle’s fastest speed, it still felt slow to Hugo. He was about to yell at Joel, when—
BOOM!
"W-what was that?" He uttered, feeling his heart drop for some reason. "GO!!"
The helicopter maneuvered in the direction of the sound, with Hugo and the others looking outwards, intent on seeing what was going on in advance.
"There! Smoke!" Sid yelled, and they immediately flew there.
Hugo prayed that that was the sound of a bomb exploding zombies and zombies alone!
But the unease in his stomach did not calm.
Khalifa, please be okay!
*********
Peace Base. Present.
The helicopter arrived at the base and hovered over the gate for a bit as there were massive guns at the walls pointed at them guardedly.
This was understandable. After all, it was a safe base. No one was naive enough to think all humans were allies.
"Fuck!" Hugo yelled, punching the helicopter’s metallic wall. "We don’t have time for this!"
"Show my face!" Cauis yelled and the pilot maneuvered the helicopter to the side and lowered its altitude, so that Cauis was visible from the guards’ point of view.
"It’s us! Please let us in!" Cauis yelled, "Khalifa is injured!!!!"
The soldiers gasped and put down their guns, letting them in without any more questions. They hovered past the walls and into the interior.
They chose to land on the nearest open space near the hospital, guided by Kiko.
It descended rapidly, wind from the machine’s rotors storing up dust and leaves and cloths. At this time, they didn’t care for the stall goods that were flown away.
Things ran fast but not fast enough. Hugo and the others followed as Khalifa was taken to the surgery room. They followed as far as they could, which was outside the OR door.
Their hearts couldn’t settle as they stood, occasionally walking to and fro, overall drowning in stress.
From the corner of his eyes, he saw the bespectacled guy find a seat and bury his face in his arms.
He could see him shaking.
Tsk. From what Hugo heard, it was his ex that was responsible for this.
However, Hugo didn’t have the right to blame Cauis because something similar happened with his own ex.
But at least Khalifa didn’t get injured because of him!
The image of a bloodied and pale Khalifa attacked his head again and his whole body weakened.
In anger, he punched the walls next to him. It was so strong it really made a dent.
Darn it! He should’ve found her sooner! She would never have been hurt like this with him around!!!
***
The men stayed still and stared, with Sid endlessly tapping his feet and Jojo walking around a hallway over and over.
It was just that only a couple of minutes later the door opened and two male nurses were led out.
They had their hands covering their noses.
This was definitely not normal!
Any abnormality was unwelcome!
The two men grabbed a nurse each, "What happened?!"
The nurses almost squealed in terror and then blushed in shame when they heard the question, "W-We were asked to call… female colleagues. Please l-let us go."
The two let them go and they scurried away. Soon, two new nurses arrived, and the door closed once more.
And there was silence again, with the men watching the door with unwavering concentration. Their hearts were tense the whole time.
An hour later the doctor finally went out and they pretty much lunged at her. If the doctor was male, perhaps they would’ve.
The female doctor flinched at the intrusion. "How is she, doctor?" Cauis asked, with Hugo peering closely behind him.
She couldn’t help but look at the men. She had heard of Khalifa and her men, though it was the first time she saw her up close.
Well, he couldn’t blame them. That girl was really a work of art.
When the girl was sent to the emergency room, with clothes off for surgery, some male nurses even got nosebleeds and had to be kicked out.
"How is she?" Cauis repeated, voice shaky.
The doctor appeared to be in her early thirties and looked quite well-kept. She looked quite academic and strict like the professor everyone was terrified of.
"She’s fine. It was a bit complicated at first because of her blood type—
"I’m an O! Please take my blood—" Cauis cut her off in a hurry but the doctor shook her head.
"I’ve never seen this blood type before." She continued, "But it’s fine. She’s stable."
"Really?"
The woman nodded, and an interested glint passed her eyes. "She heals fast. Too fast that it’s amazing…"
If she could get her blood—
Her thought was interrupted when an eerie cold surface nudged her head.
It was a gun.
Her eyes widened. "What–"
"I could tell your thoughts," Hugo said, eyes terrifying. "Khalifa’s blood is her own."
"Y-Yes! I… I wouldn’t take anything without her knowledge and permission!"
"You better."
"Y-Yes!"
"If I found out you did anything inappropriate—"
"I won’t."
The gun was put down and the doctor’s legs almost gave way. She heaved a sigh, regaining her composure in a blink of an eye.
She looked at them, eyes firm.
"I assure you, as a doctor, I will not take samples without consent." She repeated, "I want her to do well as much as anyone."
She said this, but later that night, well after visitation hours were over, a shadow went to check on Khalifa before turning in the night.
And this figure had a syringe, taking blood, very much without ’permission’.
