Chapter 178: Explosion
Chapter 178: Explosion
The wall Khalifa could create on such short notice naturally wasn’t very sturdy—only about an inch thick.
She also bent it in a curve, hopefully to bounce it a bit instead of letting it just slide down and kill her from below instead of up.
Thud!
The grenade struck the ice wall with a thumping sound. After a tense second, she watched as it slid downwards to the concave part, reflecting away from her, closer to where it was thrown.
Unfortunately, it didn’t get too far when it exploded a second after.
BOOM!
A blinding explosion followed and a shockwave rippled through the area.
Cauis and the others paled, running towards her, but the explosion made them lose their balance a bit.
Shards of ice and fiery debris scattered in all directions, hitting the zombies around, as well as a few people.
The people closest naturally received the most damage, including Khalifa herself.
The force sent her sprawling into the ground, and the jagged pieces of ice—exploded by the grenade—pierced her arms and legs, and she was left bleeding on the ground.
Meanwhile, the grenade exploded much more closely to where it came from.
Mira and Aubrey could only watch helplessly as the grenade came closer to them, and when it exploded they could only hear buzzing sounds.
They didn’t even realize that they were in pain after the explosion had long settled down.
In contrast to Khalifa’s icy injuries, the two women received fiery ones.
Aubrey’s body was peppered with shrapnel from the grenade, and body filled with burns. Blood oozed from her wounds and she lay there, dying.
Not long after, she would breathe her last, and no one would notice.
Mira managed to run away, but somehow she still received the burns… and—she belatedly realized when she touched her head—that they were burns right on her face.
She screamed desperately, and Ken immediately ran to her aid.
Similarly, Khalifa’s men had already sprinted to her, ignoring their own injuries. They used their remaining powers to kill the zombies nearby, the damned things that were keeping them from Khalifa.
Their hearts dropped as they saw her all bloodied and they felt themselves entering insanity.
But they forced themselves to keep their head on their necks, only because Khalifa needed help.
"Khalifa!!" The men yelled, as they surrounded her and attempted to stop the bleeding.
"No! Don’t pull the glass!" Kylo yelled and looked at the others. It could make it worse!
They could only stop the bleeding with the guidance of Kylo and Cauis, but other than that they shakily realized that they couldn’t do anything else.
Before, if anyone was injured, Khalifa would just heal it with her ability.
It was disconcerting how helpless they were when Khalifa wasn’t there.
Fortunately, the medic they brought in the trip only had minor injuries and quickly got to them.
It was Kiko, the big nurse they rescued before. He immediately worked with first aid, the best he could, but it barely seemed to help.
"Help us get her up properly," they ordered and the big nurse leaned down to do a preliminary check.
Each second gritted on every man’s nerves and their terrifying auras certainly weren’t helping with Kiko’s productivity.
After a bit, Kiko’s expression was heavy and he shook his head. "No, this is too deep. If we move her now— partnered with the unstable road—it might only get worse."
This was very, very, bad news and it was driving the men on the edge straight down the cliff of insanity.
"What do we do then?!" The men roared, feeling all blood in their bodies draining.
Kiko shivered at the terrifying stares of Khalifa’s men, but they soon ignored him and focused on the women, eyes red and teary.
Khalifa—
Their Khalifa—-
Was there a way to transfer her injuries to them, they would definitely take it!
But there was no such way and that moment—one that felt like forever—they were drowned in a sense of hopelessness.
They were already thinking how they’d end their own lives.
However—as if sent by the heavens—they soon heard noise above them.
It was the loud sound of an engine and massive propellers and they turned to see it was a helicopter!
It landed a distance away and they saw some laser-like shots killing some zombies that came their way.
It was a plasma gun, but none of the men cared. What they saw was the helicopter and how they could use it.
They were already thinking how to get the thing—whether the driver agreed to it or not. It was just that they didn’t have to, because the owner happened to be someone they knew.
"Khalifa!!" A person from the helicopter jumped down even before it completely landed.
He sprinted to them and his eyes widened in disbelief at Khalifa’s state.
His heart broke when he saw her covered in blood, his head buzzed in pain. He turned to look at the helicopter and yelled.
Immediately, a stretcher was taken from the helicopter and Kiko and the others helped her up as delicately as they could.
He glared at Kaize, "You said you’ll protect her!!" And then to Kylo, and he just sneered.
This time Kaize or Kylo did not have anything to rebut him with.
Hugo ignored them and climbed up, and the other men wanted to join.
However, all the noise—the bomb, the screaming, the helicopter—attracted some more zombies and now small mobs were congregating again.
"Major!" The soldiers yelled at Kylo. But the man didn’t even look at them, his eyes focused on Khalifa being carried in worry.
Hugo saw this and shook his head.
"We’ll handle it," Hugo said with cold eyes, "You go do your job."
Kylo looked at them complicatedly, before his eyes regained their firmness when Khalifa was no longer in sight and settled inside the vehicle. "Do whatever it takes."
"Of course."
Cauis saw the tension with the others. "I’ll come with them," he said and the men didn’t have time to argue about this at all.
As such, Cauis was allowed to go in while everyone else helped with the mission.
He saw Khalifa wince in pain as they carefully settled her, his heart felt like it was broken to pieces.
With bated breath, the pilot soon eased the helicopter for flight. The rhythmic sound of the blades sounded, and they prepared to take off.
However, the helicopter could lift off the ground, a woman with a bloodied face and body lunged at them, crying.
It was Mira, and she sobbed desperately.
"Please, let me come with you!!"
