Khalifa: Queen in the Apocalypse

Chapter 156: Chris’ Status

Chapter 156: Chris’ Status

A man with light brown hair frowned as he gripped his heart, a sharp pain of longing occupying his mind.

"Claire…" He uttered longingly, wondering if she was alright. Looking at the moon, he pondered where she could be at the moment.

At this point Chris knew she had already been rescued by people from the Peace Base.

He could only hope she hasn’t fallen for Ryo yet, like in the Past.

In this life, he didn’t want to share her with another man.

The current Chris, like Mira, also saw ’the dream’. And by instinct, he knew the truth behind it.

It was why he was so desperate to get back as quickly as possible. He knew she was safe, but he was scared another man would enter her heart when he wasn’t there.

While the three of them had managed to make it work, he naturally wanted to be his woman’s only man when he could help it.

Chris couldn’t help but recall the various events of the past week. Everything happened so quickly that it felt like a dream.

A little over a week ago, his relatives called for a reunion because a cousin of his won a scholarship in an ivy league school.

But who knew, in the middle of the party, at least half of the people fainted and when they got up they were no longer humans.

The first few days he could only focus on his own survival, planning his way back home in his own capacity.

But one night he had a nightmare, and it felt so real.

He realized it had a basis of truth when some knowledge in the dream—for instance, crystals in the hearts of zombies—proved true.

He didn’t want to believe it. He didn’t want to believe that his Claire would give her heart to another.

But she had.

"Are you alright?" A low baritone voice sounded. Chris turned to look at the handsome man beside him, who was kind enough to be concerned.

He must’ve been showing quite a distressed expression for this stoic man to speak up.

He nodded. "Yes, thank you."

The man didn’t ask any more questions and turned his head back to the front window. Very quickly, the familiar air of silence occupied the car again.

Chris couldn’t help but send some furtive glances at the dashing man, looking at him with complicated eyes.

The man was very handsome. A military major with black hair, blue eyes, and a stoic temperament.

He knew this person, albeit he never met them personally in the dream.

Kylo Murong. Ryo’s uncle.

The military leader of the Capitol Base, and the one with most power.

For now.

He had heard of this man. And he knew he would perish in a couple of months.

He didn’t remember much about it, but he knew he was a good soldier and it was a pity for the human race to lose him.

The man felt his stare and turned to him with the same impassive expression on his face. "Is there anything wrong?"

"A-Ah, no. I’m just wondering how my friends are…"

Unaware of the other man’s internal monologue, Kylo just nodded and continued looking out the window of their reinforced van.

No one spoke again after that and everyone was left to their own thoughts.

While Chris was pining for his girl, Kylo was similarly longing for his promiscuous lover.

If only he could use the helicopter, they’d have used it ages ago. Who’d have thought, just as they were leaving, one of his team members realized that the engine had started to corrode.

Had they gone to travel with the machine, they’d have been able to fly for a while, but then their engine would fail, likely midair.

He ordered mass investigation and had to wait for its settlement before he could even leave, and they found out it was two cadets, seduced by a single woman.

It was a woman named Suli, Prance’s woman. It was just that she unfortunately managed to escape, leaving her suitors in the base to be captured.

The investigation soon determined that everything was the woman’s wish. Apparently, neither of the suitors knew that the liquid was so corrosive. They thought it’d just give some trouble.

Then… they found out the fuel used was the same batch Khalifa’s car had!

Fortunately, he knew she was okay since they had spoken on the phone. He could recall how it felt like his heart started beating again when he heard her voice.

It was just that she confirmed that the car indeed encountered problems.

He apologized and promised to make it up to her, and she just said he just had to serve her well.

He might not have understood the innuendo before, but now everything Khalifa said had some sort of romantic or sexual implications to him.

He was hard for a long time after that phone call, and he had to take a long cold shower to calm himself down.

In any case, in the temporary absence of air travel, they had to make do with driving. He went with a team of a score and they were heading to a subsidiary base to check on it.

However, in order not to attract the dependency of the survivors, they didn’t use a car with any military indicators. They were also wearing normal clothing for this reason.

There was also the fact that uniforms were limited so until the production line stabilized, they would make do without the uniforms.

The travel was relatively peaceful as they passed a no traffic area, which had relatively passable roads.

Except for a few mobs, they didn’t encounter much trouble at all.

However, the car in front suddenly made an abrupt stop and Kylo frowned. The soldiers habitually took out their guns.

Kylo didn’t want to waste bullets, currently a finite resource until the factories began properly working again.

The armories were unfortunately damaged by an explosion caused by zombies, and this caused a shortage in hot weapons, even in the country’s most premier safe base.

He opened his radio, eyebrows furrowed. "Report! What happened?"

"Sir! Sharp spikes are found on the pathway!"

Kylo frowned, "Ready your weapons!"

This was clearly a trap, and everyone did as they were told.

A sniper opened the roof window to get out, aiming at where the trap setters likely were. The others remained in the safety of their low-key but well-built vehicles, but they had their guns on hand with windows slightly opened, ready to shoot as needed.

Suddenly a group of scavengers armed with makeshift weapons emerged, not knowing they were against hard stubble.

Unsurprisingly, the group was indeed trying to loot them.

"Get out of the car!" One man yelled, followed by his cronies, pointing their guns at the car.

Kylo watched this all carefully and was surprised to see familiar faces. He stopped his team from coming out with full weapons.

"Don’t," he said as his eyes studied the scenery outside.

"Sir?"

"It’s fine. Make sure the snipers are ready." He said, "And that they see at least half of you."

"Sir, yes, sir!"

Before going out, his azure eyes stayed in one direction. He looked at the two out of four men that almost became Khalifa’s rapists.

It seemed they were still scum of society even after the tragedy. On the contrary, they embraced this part of themselves even more.

Kylo had always wanted to beat them up more for what they could’ve done to Khalifa.

He wondered how to get those two people while avoiding an all-out gunfight….

As he pondered, he didn’t notice a current of electricity passing by his hands, disappearing into thin air as if it was never there.
