Khalifa: Queen in the Apocalypse

Chapter 109: Accident

Chapter 109: Accident

"Damnit!" They ran, trying to find a path without ugly zombies blocking.

They had to use their remaining guns this time, which really hurt Hugo’s heart.

Khalifa pondered whether to say she still has guns but decided not to yet. She didn’t trust Trina and a few of the others yet.

She was powerful, but not powerful enough to go against organizations or governments who might want to experiment on her and take her space.

"We need to find cover!" Hugo yelled and they looked for a possible hiding spot.

The group changed directions and went to a midrise building they could get to.

They sprinted towards it. Tension ran high and the sound of the horde grew louder by the second.

"Fuckfuckfuck!!" Jojo yelled as he waved around his weapon, Lisa was also crying but not without taking down a few heads. Trina was also the same.

Hugo used up his guns already and was using the gun as a hammer instead. He cursed, feeling annoyed.

As he fought though, he found a gun suddenly appeared in front of him.

"Here," Khalifa said, and he blinked. He didn’t have the time to ask where it came from but he immediately turned it on.

He knew this model. It was a machine gun Kaize asked for.

How’d she get it here?

But he didn’t have time to think. He simply shot around, accurately and skillfully, clearing a path to the building.

It was an ominous sight, a wave of zombies approaching from all sides, aiming to consume them like ants consuming a drop of honey.

Hugo went on a shooting spree with Khalifa to deal with the leaks. Soon, the gun died, but fortunately, they were only a few meters away from the building—which, to their relief—had sturdy-looking door gates.

However, before they entered the gate, they heard a yell behind them.

"Kyaaa! Help meee!!"

It was Lisa who had been bitten on the neck, and then the leg.

Khalifa walked back out the threshold—to the men’s shock—and extended her sword to kill the zombies around Lisa. Unfortunately, the woman’s eyes turned white and soon showed symptoms of transforming.

Khalifa sighed with great regret, beheading her former companion. At the very least, she could give her the kindness of not letting her corpse be a walking dead.

Khalifa’s peripheral view couldn’t help but notice a shaking Trina, who had lowered her head in shame.

She had an idea of what just happened here.

"Watch out, Khalifa!" She heard Hugo’s yell, and she turned her head, realizing she was distracted.

But then a large piece of sharp metal appeared next to her, piercing through the zombie’s head.

They blinked and Hugo threw another one. "What—" he killed another zombie as he ran to Khalifa, pulling her back to the safety of the gate, shutting it closed, and another bar of metal appeared to block it from opening.

His head was still dizzy with shock when he felt a soft warmth touch his cheek, bringing him back to the present.

"Congratulations. You must’ve awakened the power." Khalifa said with a smile.

"Congrats," Sid said, as he axed his way through as there were still plenty of zombies who managed to get in, not to mention the zombies within the fence.

Hugo quickly shook the shock and threw knife after knives to the heads of the zombies, using his well-trained accuracy. "You have to behead them," Khalifa couldn’t help but say, "And you’ll get tired quickly if you just throw things like that."

Hugo smiled, just loving that she cared so much for him.

Jojo, on the other hand, looked bright at the new tricks, almost getting killed in the process. Thankfully, Sid was alert enough to keep him from dying.

"Thanks." He said, and he couldn’t help but feel excited at the amazing sight, wanting to watch more.

Of course, he wasn’t stupid to actually do it now.

Hugo noted all of Khalifa’s advice and started using his ability more efficiently. When he successfully beheaded a zombie with one shot, he turned to look at Khalifa who was no longer in a daze, resuming her killing sprees. She turned her head to him and smiled, and Hugo felt very proud.

Anyway, the group continued on their way. Khalifa was focused on defending Mrs. Adams, with Hugo right next to her.

Slowly, they approached the building and with Hugo’s new ability, the burden was considerably lighter.

Hugo continued to pierce through zombie heads next to Khalifa, protecting her. Trina was jealous and obsessed.

Why! She met him first! Why did she stoop so low as to push someone as a shield, while she was being protected so wholeheartedly??

She couldn’t help but recall Hugo’s already dashing image further elevated by his newfound power!

She must get Hugo!

They eventually reached their destinations and immediately locked the building’s doors.

Hugo created a metal stick for extra blockage, and Khalifa formed a thin wall of ice behind it to mask their smell from the outside.

It was an apartment building, and the lobby of the building had several people and thus zombies, inside.

Fortunately, Sid was alert and he and Jojo managed to defend the two power users while they dealt with the entrance.

However, all wasn’t over yet as there were still several zombies inside, getting attracted by the noise they were making.

Fortunately, the narrow walkway worked to their advantage. It limited the number of zombies they had to fight at a time.

"It should be safer upstairs," Hugo said as he led the group to the stairs.

He could no longer manifest spikes, but he held on to one, following Khalifa’s lead of extending it as needed.

As they approached the landing, defending against the zombies following them up, Trina couldn’t help but notice Khalifa’s current position on the stair landing—easy to destabilize with a little push.

The mixture of depression, fear, and rage that built up the past few days rendered her unable to think well anymore.

Her feet moved on their own, intent on pushing Khalifa to the zombies, hoping with all her heart she would turn to one of them—ideally turning into the ugliest zombie!

How funny would it be if Hugo had to kill her himself!!!

Trina tried to use her body to bump into her. However, to her surprise Khalifa was pulled away, though the momentum let the savior fall instead.

"Mrs. Adams!!!" Khalifa yelled, still unable to completely comprehend what just happened.

Her eyes widened as she watched the woman bitten by several zombies at once, and she felt the surge of power she had been holding back explode.

Immediately, large ice picks surrounded her, killing all the zombies down the stairs, and leaving a vacuum of safety around a dying Mrs. Adams.

As she walked shakily to her, some analysis went on at the back of her mind, realizing that a certain redhead must’ve been pushing people again.

Walking forward, she turned in the direction of the woman, pale in fear, shaking.

"I…."

Slash!

She said no more, her head falling down with a flop.

Khalifa’s cold eyes didn’t even remain on the corpse as she turned back to Jacob’s mother. She kneeled down to Mrs. Adams, tears couldn’t help but form in her eyes.

She shakily used her little remaining ability to freeze her wounds in an attempt to slow down the damage.

But the woman’s hand landed on hers, a gentle smile gracing her lips, very different from the lifeless woman she had been the past few days.

"He always mentioned you. I should’ve known." He said, uttering her first words in days. "You…. You made him very happy."

Khalifa wasn’t listening well to her, because she was focused on trying to stop the bleeding. Mrs. Adams held her hand, comforting. "Don’t waste your energy, anymore…I didn’t want to live. There was no point."

Her voice was cracking now, weakening. "I just wanted to be able to do something for him once before I leave…." She said, and her voice now barely audible. "Let me be with them, okay?"

And she didn’t say any more words as her hands fell to the side, and she lost her breath.

Mrs. Adams did not transform. At the very least, dying purely as a human.

Khalifa couldn’t speak, her tears blocking her view.

She was so distracted she failed to see a zombie was still alive.

"Khalifa!"

Crunch!

She gaped as she found herself in the protective embrace of her lover, who used his weapon to behead the zombie biting on his shoulder.

He then pulled its head attached to his skin, pulling a good part of his flesh, making him bleed profusely.

"Hugo!" She yelled, embracing him.

She shook. Nononono.

Not Hugo, too—

Hugo turned pale, grasping onto her, as if trying to make sure he was protectively wrapped around her even if he lost consciousness.

However there was a thought that echoed in his head as his vision dimmed.

He hoped he wouldn’t turn into a zombie.

After all, Khalifa found them really ugly.
