The next morning, Shen Yunfang was woken up by the sound of a bugle call from outside; opening her eyes, she saw that only she and her son were on the kang, Li Hongjun was nowhere to be seen, having left at some point in time.

She checked on her son, who was still pouting his little lips, sound asleep. After tucking him in, she got dressed and got off the kang to prepare breakfast.

To her surprise, when she got to the outer room, she found breakfast already prepared in the pot: millet porridge with white flour buns on top. The white buns certainly weren’t freshly steamed that morning but were frozen ones they’d brought from Gaijiatun.
