Chapter 85: Competing
Chapter 85: Competing
"You....." The blade Demon looked over at Ember with eyes filled with rage. She called him a retard in front of the great Mage, this was utterly humiliating, and he would not take it sitting down.
"Get back and prepare for your match" one of the twin elders commanded. Hearing this, the blade Demon bowed to the great elders before waking towards Ember.
"You will serve as my stepping stone to the top, with the great mage on my side even your father wouldn’t dare go after me" the blade Demon smirked before pulling out a blade as pitch-black as the night itself.
"Oh??" One of the twin elders looked taken aback. What the blade Demon had in his hand was a grade 2 magic treasure….magic treasures, these were one of the mages most priced possessions, one of the tools they used to get an upper hand against the other races.
Magic treasures existed in their varieties, but their main function remained the same. Mana amplification!!! Yes, with a magic treasure, a normal mage who already had an upper hand in using mana would receive significant boosts. In fact with the addition of some other tweaks, the treasures would gain unique properties.
But this wasn’t what bothered the elder. No, a grade 2 magic treasure was several times more dangerous than a grade 1 and normally, no mage at level 1 could use one of those, it was abnormal to see one in the hands of this so-called blade Demon.
"Hmp!! Using a magic treasure to gain an upper hand, typical!!" Ember sneered. It wasn’t against the rules to use one, but she just wanted to point out his advantageous situation.
"Life’s not fair, brat" the blade Demon exploded with mana and dashed forward.
"You’re right" Ember shook her head and conjured a spell.
"Flame work: twin arrows"
A spell circle appeared before Ember and shot out almost immediately, barreling towards the blade demon. It was a simple spell, and the blade Demon was able to dispel it easily. However, what followed was a kick directly to the face of the blade Demon.
—Boom!!!!
Ember appeared out of nowhere and in a brief second sent the blade Demon back. He didn’t let up though, as soon as he touched the ground he leapt forward and rushed Ember.
He was arrogant and proud, but that didn’t mean he didn’t know how to fight. He had been fighting all his life.
—woop
—bang
—Slash
—Clang
They began exchanging blows, the blade Demon with is blade and Ember with a short dagger. It was fierce, but everyone could clearly see that it was a stalemate in its truest essence.
Both were equally matched in battle prowess and sensitive.
"Blend: black wind reaper"
All of a sudden, the blade Demon spoke, causing his weapon to light up with strange symbols. Following which the blade was engulfed by wind.
—voom
He slashed forward, pushing a massively amplified wind blade towards Ember, it was huge, and immediately the other recruits saw it they involuntarily jumped backwards.
Fortunately, it wasn’t aiming for them, and with its speed and strength, it was bound to hit its target, Ember.
—Boom
And so it did. Not only did it cut Ember, it pushed her directly into the side of a wall of the cave.
"Hm!!" At the side of the Elders and officials, Half-moon clenched his fist. The grade 2 treasure was a cheat, the level at which it amplified the blade Demon’s mana was astronomical. He didn’t want his little princess to get hurt.
But there was nothing he could do, she chose this path. If it were up to him, she would never have joined the faceless mercenary company.
One Ember’s side, she stood up slowly with her left hand over her bleeding left arm. Her hair was mishavelled and her face looked surprisingly cold.
Ember was usually hot-headed and would lash out randomly, sometimes for the most absurd reasons. But not this time, this time she looked and acted very differently.
"Dance for me, brat!!!" The blade Demon laughed evil before sending another amplified wind blade her way.
—voom
This time, Ember was able to barely dodge. But still, she was left unscathed.
—voom
—voom
—voom
The blade Demon didn’t relent though, he kept sending wind blade after wind blade at Ember, it was so much that it nearly engulfed the whole space, forcing several of the top 20 to defend themselves against it.
"Should we stop it?" One of the twin elders asked. He, too, had dodged a wind blade and appeared behind the great mage.
"Uhhhh, no. Ember can take him" the great mage shook his head. This greatly shocked the people present. What did he mean by that? Clearly the one dominating here was the blade Demon, so how could the great mage say that?
Even Half-moon was shocked, he didn’t understand what his friend here was talking about.
"Watch" the great mage smiled.
Soon, Ember, who seemed to be constantly dodging all the blade Demon’s attacks, stopped at the side of Leon.
"I want you to watch" she whispered to Leon before turning to the blade Demon. While maintaining her chilling expression, Ember raised her hand forward and conjured.
"Flame work: scorching blaze"
A magic spell circle appeared before her and caused the people around to frown. This was a normal spell, most who were intoned to fire magic could use it. She would need more than that to defeat the blade Demon and his grade 2 treasure. This was too ordinary.
That was what they thought, but as soon as the fire energy formed in the magic circle, they were all stunned.
It was cyan in color, a special Flame.
"Hehehe, surprise old friend" the great mage chuckled while patting Half-moon on the back.
A Special Flame.
It was absolutely unbelievable, normal people couldn’t in their wildest imaginations think about controlling one of these. It wasn’t like blood manipulation where one was born with it, you had to actively find a Flame like this before trying your luck to see If you could control it.
Furthermore, it was tedious and 90% of the time would end up killing off the people who attempted to manipulate it.
"Oh my lord" Half-moon couldn’t believe it, apart from one of their ancestors, no-one had been able to use this flame for the longest time. He couldn’t believe that Ember could.
But it got him to thinking.....what if she had failed? Did Damien really risk his child’s life like that? What was going through this guy’s head?
—puuuuuu
—woooooommmmm!!!!!!
The cyan colored Flame started small, then in an instant it blazed forward and turned into a massive fireball consuming the blade Demon whole.
He didn’t have the opportunity to react, and was swiftly engulfed in fire, burning his body to a black tar. This match was over.....
"Amazing…." Leon smiled from behind. He knew for a fact that Ember was special, but he didn’t know how special until now.
(I wonder)
Leon couldn’t help but admire this Flame, it looked calm and gentle, but the way it burned was aggressive and cruel. It was a contradiction of its appearance.
"Winner" one of the twin elders proclaimed Ember as the winner. The match was over.
,,,,,,,, ,,,,,,,
Half-moon later received Ember like a proud father. He was beyond excited, and so was the Great mage. The people around couldn’t help but feel jealousy.
A few minutes passed And the matches continued, until finally, it was Leon’s turn.
Leon walked to the front of the stage and waited. Then he was joined by his opponent.
His opponent was around his height and had a slim build, he wore all black and carried an aura that Leon couldn’t even detect. In fact, when he stepped on the floor, Leon could not even hear his footsteps.
(strange)
Leon thought in his mind, the kid felt like he wasn’t even there even though Leon would clearly see him.
He was ghost face. Actually, this kid was notorious, during his entrance test he was able to get his win effortlessly. No one even noticed when he killed 20 people, only after the match did they notice. He was a born assassin.
But this wasn’t the most terrifying thing about him. The most terrifying thing was that this kid was actually under the tutelage of the great Mage.
Everyone knew this and, as such, they all avoided him like the plague. Leon, who was essentially a nobody, was bound to lose.
"Do you want to go out and get something to eat?" Over at the great mages table, he could be seen petting Embers head like a child. Surprisingly, Ember didn’t react aggressively, apart from her father, the only person she allowed to do that was her uncle Damien.
"Haha, brother Damien, let’s stay for a minute, I have a surprise for you too" Half-moon encouraged the great mage to stay.
"Ah? You have a surprise for me?" The great mage asked before looked back at the stage.
"You brought another one?" The great mage said while looking directly at Leon.
Half-moon was constantly trying to compete with him on who could bring in the best talents. And today’s match was the worst of all for Half-moon, the great mage had used his own daughter to win against someone he had picked.
Of course, he didn’t plan for the blade Demon to be so ruthless to his daughter, he would have stepped in if she was the real danger. As for blade demon, he would teach the brat a thing or two later.
"Just watch" Half-moon said.
