Khalifa: Queen in the Apocalypse

Chapter 142: First Mission

Chapter 142: First Mission

The soldiers looked at the newcomers, most of whom were pondering about their accommodation.

"You will register here and determine your possible job. Before you earn your keep and choose to spend contribution points for larger accommodations, you will be staying in the dormitory rooms."

Ryo walked over to Khalifa and Jacob, who were standing relatively away from the crowd.

He handed them a key card. "This is yours." He said, "It’s a one-bedroom unit in Area C."

Khalifa smiled and took it naturally. "Thanks~"

A lot of people had been following Khalifa, eyeing whatever she did, and a lot of them naturally discovered the preferential treatment Khalifa was getting.

They looked at the soldiers with a frown. Someone even whispered she managed to seduce them somehow.

Ryo frowned, "If you could kill dozens of zombies instantly, we can talk about it."

"..."

Ryo’s mother, who had run to the gates as she heard the news of her son’s return, actually heard him speaking up for a woman!

A GORGEOUS one at that!

"Ryo~"

"Mother."

"Good that you’re home with a complete body," She said, sniffing, and patting her son’s shoulder (which was well above her head).

She then ’inadvertently’ looked next to him to look at the beautiful woman. "Oh? Who is this?"

"This is Khalifa. She’s a strong ally we earned on our trip."

"Ally? Oh, okay okay. Do you want to have dinner with us?"

Khalifa blinked and then turned to Ryo, who also looked a little confused.

But he never really questioned his mother, especially with these little things, and he didn’t say anything.

Thrilled that her son didn’t stop her, she quickly grabbed the girl’s arm (so soft, so milky!) And gently dragged her to her house.

But a few steps later it got difficult to pull and she realized Khalifa’s other hand was pulled by another man.

It was a handsome man (though not as handsome as her son) with good shape. He was firmly holding Khalifa’s other arm, keeping her back.

Olivia frowned, "This…"

"This is my lover, Jacob, he doesn’t like being away from me, you see." The girl said (such an angelic voice!), and Olivia’s shoulders slumped in disappointment.

But then, she paused, looking at her inquiringly, "Are you married?"

"...no?"

"Okay, good."

"..."

Anyway, the two of Jacob and Khalifa were invited to dinner, much to the pouting of many others.

Jacob had his alert level high at this time. He had a feeling of his precious corner being pried.

After some walking with a lot of chatting (courtesy of the mother), they soon arrived at their destination.

Ryo’s house was a townhouse unit with two floors and a small front yard. They entered the home as guests and were served some snacks while she prepared dinner.

The dinner was simple but lovely. There were two viands, a vegetable meal, and rice.

It might have been an average offering a few weeks back, but by the current standards, this was already very generous.

"So… how did the two of you meet?" Olivia asked the youngsters, placing a small piece of meat on Khalifa’s plate.

"Oh, thank you." She said, referring to the food, before answering, "We chanced upon their group during our trip." Khalifa said, very humbly, and it was Ryo who supplemented for her.

"She rescued us."

"Oh?? How?"

She had a feeling it was a colorful story. Oh, how romantic!

Before they could answer though, the door knocked twice. Olivia stood up to open the door to a regal-looking old man.

He was quite tall and had aquiline features, making him look a bit scary.

And if Hugo could see him, he would recognize this guy as the top-tier soldier associated with the scummy research lab he was pulled into.

"Ah, you’re here!" Olivia smiled, stepping aside to let him in. Ryo stood up and saluted when he entered.

"Uncle Lee," He said, before sitting back casually to resume his meal.

Khalifa’s eyebrows rose.

It seemed that the grandfather i.e. leader of the base was there. General Lee.

A man in his late fifties, but still had a strong aura that intimidated anyone.

He was also ’scheduled’ to die within a few weeks, at the latest.

"Oh? I heard you brought quite a few survivors this time." The old man said, eyes passing over Khalifa and Jacob, "Still powerful ones."

"Sit down, sit down." Olivia said, adding a plate. "We were just talking about how Khalifa here saved Ryo’s team."

Ryo and Khalifa looked at each other and wondered who would tell the story. In the end, they just supplemented each other with their respective point of view.

Neither Ryo nor Khalifa were active storytellers, but the older generation could imagine the dangers and the powers somehow.

"Can I see?" The old man asked in interest.

Khalifa nodded and allowed a cute ball of water to float in her hand, traveling finger to finger, earning the amazement of everyone else.

"Amazing." The general said with bright eyes, "You said it should happen to more people? How come you got it early?"

Jacob frowned and pulled her closer to him.

The general blinked, and immediately apologized. "I’m sorry for alarming you. I’m truly just curious."

"Talent, I suppose?" Khalifa answered him with a shrug, then proceeded to change the topic. "I can confirm that the crystals help us improve a bit."

"Crystals? The one found in zombies hearts?" The general asked with a frown.

They had been collecting them when it was convenient, for further study, but ignored them every other time.

"Yes, that’s the one."

The general imagined all those crystals that had been ignored, instantly feeling regret.

But a general was a general and he didn’t dwell on it for more than a second.

Instead he proceeded on his next task: the reason why he went on a surprise house call in the first place.

"Thank you for your information. We will use it well," he said, pausing. "Actually there’s a very important mission we could use your help with."

Khalifa leisurely leaned back and looked at the old man in interest, "It depends on what it is, general."

The general nodded, "If you could help the team, I could give you a generous amount of crystals. There is a mission out for this but for you, I will add at least 5000 crystals for each of you."

Khalifa’s eyebrows rose, very interested. "What is it?"

"Going to the hospital with a team, and getting the necessary equipment, medicine, and professionals."

He paused, looking at her somberly, hoping she’d accept. "What do you think?"

Offering such a high reward meant it was dangerous, but she still had confidence.

She smiled, extending her hand forward. "Okay, deal."

***

The Mission Area was located in the communal area of the barracks.

There were counters with logistics soldiers behind, talking to the people in front, and every word exchange was mission-related.

They approached and inquired more about the hospital’s mission. As mentioned by the general, there was a public mission for this, with relatively strict requirements for its participants.

It so happened that people were asking about the mission when they arrived.

"Obtain the following medical supplies and equipment from the G General Hospital 30 kilometers away:

"Medical supplies like bandages, gauze, antiseptics, IV sets, alcohols, etc.

"Medicine like Antibiotics, painkillers, antivirals, and other lifesaving drugs.

"You must also get First aid kits, PPEs, oxygen tanks, and other respiratory equipment, as well as surgical instruments like scalpels and retractors.

"Additional rewards would be given to teams that could obtain sterilization equipment such as autoclaves, and Diagnostic devices such as Portable x-ray machines, portable ultrasound machines, defibrillators, and the like."

"More bonuses would be received upon the successful procurement of working power generators."

"If possible, medical reference books would also be given some rewards.

"Finally, the rescue of any medical professionals would also be rewarded separately."

The rewards were called contribution points which could be exchanged for food, lodging, and other necessities.

A lot of people did the calculation. People who could get this reward could live well for at least a month. This was only the minimum, not including the additional bonuses mentioned above.

The mission was therefore very attractive.

She could see the people and the soldiers planning for the trip and, frankly, Khalifa’s adventure gears were also getting quite excited.

She looked at Jacob and the others, chattering about what strategy they could use to maximize the points.

As she planned for her first mission though, she didn’t notice that the GPS of her universal phone was pinging not one, not two, but four different phones, all heading in her direction.
