Khalifa: Queen in the Apocalypse

Chapter 116: The Capitol Base

Chapter 116: The Capitol Base

After some time, their car finally reached the threshold of the tall wall. It was made of reinforced concrete at least four meters high, not including the electric fence that stood above it.

It was very reassuring to look at.

All of the newcomers were asked to park the car on the side as the soldiers checked it, while the people would also be checked for fresh wounds and any symptoms of zombification.

There were so many soldiers with guns around, so no one dared to do or say anything against it, even those people who were worrying that their supplies would get stolen.

Considering what they had experienced in some other safe base before this one, their cynicism was understandable.

When their group got down the car, the air around froze a little, with all attention on them.

They were a gorgeous group (except for poor Jojo, who was average at best). Along with their clean and well-kept appearance, they naturally attracted a lot of attention.

Some people even recognized Khalifa and gulped, noting her appearance with obsession.

Hugo and Sid wanted to stab their eyes.

However, there were plenty of soldiers around and there was, fortunately, no chaos at all.

It was well-organized and the entrance fees were fair. There was a fixed price per person at every entrance. In the end, they only had to give a few kilograms of rice in total or similar items for entry.

This came to everyone’s relief, as they would not be forced to give a percentage of their loot like they had heard from others in the line.

The group lined up for the pedestrian checking, which took a while because they had to undress.

"The women’s side…" Khalifa asked a blushing soldier beside her, who flinched and stuttered at her attention.

"W-Will be checked by women soldiers, ma’am!" He yelled, almost saluting.

He was so silly that Khalifa chuckled, mesmerizing all men in the vicinity.

Hugo’s eyes twitched but didn’t say anything. He could tell most of the soldiers here were decent. It was good for Khalifa to get their good will.

However, he saw the line and he too asked a soldier. "How many people are inside now?"

"Over forty thousand people."

"So many?" It’s only been a week.

Although he estimated the place could take ten times that amount, the living conditions that could handle so many people should still be in the development stage at best.

He worried for their living environment. Even if he and Khalifa only planned to stay a day or two, how could he bear to let her live in a sty?

With a lot of consideration, he decided to go to Kylo (without Khalifa) to see if he could help them get a good place to rest.

So as he was being checked, he asked the soldiers. "I’m friends with Kylo… do you know where he is?

The soldier looked a little surprised and looked at him to determine whether he was lying. "The Lieutenant just left."

"Oh?" Hugo paused and the soldier nodded. He recalled the convoy that passed by them earlier when they were heading up.

He had a feeling that guy was in that military truck that passed them. A little pity, but Hugo shrugged in the end. He didn’t really want to talk to him anyway.

He wondered where they’d live though…

After being checked for fresh wounds and passing, the group met inside without being wronged. Khalifa even had an extra chocolate, given by one of the soldiers to express admiration.

Of course, female soldiers were responsible for checking women’s bodies, but they expressed so much admiration (and, from some, rants and gossip) that it caught the attention of some soldiers outside. .

The soldiers who gave the chocolate were still staring at Khalifa, eyes glazed as she ate the chocolate.

Frowning, Hugo wrapped his arm around her possessively and raised a hand.

Using his ability he conjured a metal spike over his middle finger as he gave the soldier the sign.

The soldier was surprised, took a second look, and wondered if he was seeing things.

Anyway, he knew it was dangerous so he quickly hurried away to care for other refugees.

Seeing the soldier go away, he looked down at Khalifa who was nibbling cutely at the chocolate. "Delicious?" he asked with a sneer. Khalifa looked up at him and, thinking he was staring because he was hungry, let him have a bite.

He ate it and it was sweet but it still left a bitter aftertaste in his mouth. "Can you stop attracting other men?"

"Shall I wear a hoodie then?"

He pursed his lips and didn’t say anything anymore.

Anyway, they waited for Sid and Jojo to get out of the testing room, ignoring the stares directed at them.

She could tell a few women also recognized her as Kaize’s woman, but they dare not point at her for fear of Hugo, who was handsome but was looking quite menacing at the moment as he had been sending endless glares at the men who were gaping at her.

They eventually left the crowded space, not noticing the extra sets of eyes that were following them around.

The group went out and they went to rent a room. The country’s largest military barracks was naturally large, about 500 square kilometers, the size of a very small town.

It was just that the buildings were limited as most of these areas were training grounds, parking, et cetera.

Hence, the thousands of refugees put a strain on the space and they could only get bed spaces at best.

Fortunately for them, Khalifa had her ’magic backpack’ and brought out a few more kilograms of rice in exchange for a good room for them, so they could have even a little privacy.

The room they got was in the barracks area, in stark contrast with most of the population which squeezed in dozens of people in a container fitted out to be residences.

The smell naturally sucked, but things really could’ve been so much worse so the people didn’t complain. Most of them, anyway.

Moreover, from what they heard, this was still much, much better than most of the bases out there.

The group of four settled down their temporary abode with Hugo pulling Khalifa in one of the beds to nap.

Sid ignored them and took out the portable cooker they got to eat an early dinner.

He was planning on cooking before going out to look for his sister. He knew not to let Khalifa go hungry.

"Thanks, Sid," she said with a smile and Sid, ignoring Hugo’s sneer, smiled back, just happy to make her smile.
