Chapter 189 189: Hunting The Predator

Chapter 189 189: Hunting The Predator

Ren and Lilith followed the rest of the new Chosen as they were led through the church to where they'd been told was the Chosen Hall.

Their new white cloaks switched behind them as they walked, the Chosen speaking excitedly among themselves.

Before long, they entered the Chosen hall. The large hall was like a mix between a common room and a cafeteria. Lining the hall were long wooden tables, each set with trays of bread, fruit, and ceremonial wine.

They all took their seats on the benches affixed to the tables, murmur of anticipation filling the air.

Axel, Florian's enemy, who was the senior Chosen that had been assigned to escort them, walked at the front, a big smile on his face.

"This is your moment to celebrate." He announced. "In a few minutes, the older Chosen will join us to welcome you properly. You'll be assigned your personal quarters after this… celebration, and tomorrow, you'll receive your first postings."

The announcement was met with a ripple of excitement. Laughter broke out among the pairs. Some were giddy, others were relieved, and even a few were teary-eyed.

"You can start eating though." Axel laughed, taking a seat on the closest bench and dragging the plates closer to himself.

With chuckles, the eating and drinking began. Some of the new Chosen removed their cloaks to relax as the older Chosen began to filter in, congratulating and cheering the new addition to their order.

Cups were raised in silent toasts and there was a merry atmosphere in the air.

Until a loud, discordant resonance thrummed through the walls, sharp and jarring, like a harp string snapping out of tune. The benches trembled slightly beneath them.

The conversation died instantly.

The new Chosen looked around, confused.

"What was that?"

"Did someone trigger a loop?"

Before anyone could answer, the older Chosen who had just arrived went pale, and then exploded into movement. Cloaks flared as they bolted from the hall, weapons in hand, no orders needed.

Axel froze, blinking in disbelief. Then his eyes flicked to his subordinates.

"The church…" He breathed. "The church is under attack."

The new Chosen stared at him, stunned.

"Get up!" He barked. "Now! Move!"

The moment Axel shouted the command, the new Chosen erupted into chaos. Some people's resonances activated, sending the benches to the ground as they all scrambled to their feet, following after the senior Chosen who had already stormed out of the chamber.

Cloaks billowed behind them as feet pounded against the stone floor, echoing down the long, twisting halls of the church. Axel led the group, his shouts echoing all around them.

Ren and Lilith kept to the rear of the group, their pace fast enough to keep up but slow enough to not be too close to the group.

Shouts filled the air ahead as they got closer to the doors leading outside. Some were shouting orders, others were panicking, and one very smart person was calling for formations.

The younger Chosen were trained in combat, but this was one that would be making use of their Resonance magic, something they hadn't yet gotten any training in. they followed, wide-eyed and unsure of what they'd even be doing.

But that wasn't what caught Ren's attention. It was the frantic whispers that made its way down the group to the very rear.

"It's the Red Plague." One of the new Chosens said, voice trembling. "Rainhold's breached. The infected are inside."

Ren and Lilith exchanged a glance, both understanding instantly.

Without a word, Ren veered unseen toward a side hallway and Lilith followed. They slipped into a narrow storeroom, the sound of the others fading behind them.

Lilith shut the door and turned. "Is it time?"

Ren nodded. "It's time. This was plan A all along. If we succeed, we might not even need the Blood Chosen."

"Alright." Lilith nodded, her eyes narrowing coldly. "Let's end this before it spreads too far."

Ren held out his hand, and Lilith took it without hesitation.

With an exhale, Ren reached for one of the thousand beacons shining in his head. Specifically, the one that was with Thorn. There was a pop and they reappeared at Thorn's location.

They were in the room at the top of the inn they'd gotten days before. They looked around to see Elias dozing away in a chair, hand on his blade.

Valen sat nearby, dragging a whetstone slowly along one of his twin swords, the sound filling the air.

And as for Thorn, he stood at the window, arms crossed, a steaming cup of tea in one hand as he looked out over Rainhold. Fires burned below, screams echoing through the streets, and smoke rising into the sky.

He raised the cup to his lips, took a long sip, then glanced over his shoulder, a slow grin spreading across his face.

"Took you long enough." He said. "Is it time to hunt the Red Prophet?"

Ren stepped forward, his eyes meeting Thorn's with a cold grin on his face. "Yes." He gave a single nod. "It is time."

Thorn's grin widened. "Finally. We were dying of boredom over here."

Ren crossed the room, standing beside him at the window. "Are you sure he's here?"

Thorn took another sip of his tea, then nodded toward the burning city. "If you weren't sure of my tracking skills, why did you come here in the first place?"

There was a beat of silence, before Ren answered. "To join the Chosen, obviously. Remember plan B?"

"Oh, yeah. Sorry. Forgot about that." Thorn chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly.

"How the hell would you forget that?" Lilith asked incredulously. "That's why Ren and I were missing."

Elias started awake as Thorn frowned at Lilith. "You look… well." Thorn said, eyes flicking from Lilith to Ren in suspicion.

"We don't have time for this, Thorn." Ren said, sparking the man into action.

"I've been tracking the flow of the infected." Thorn downed the rest of his tee, tossing the cup out the window. "The way they move, how they collapse around certain areas. It's coordinated enough for me to track the mental source."

He held Ren's gaze. "He's here, Ren. Deep in the city, pulling strings like a mad puppeteer."

Ren nodded once. "Then we move."

He turned toward the others. "Thorn and I will go after the Red Prophet directly. We'll stay hidden and move fast. He won't see us coming."

"You three are the distraction." Ren continued with a nod at Lilith, Elias and Valen. "Fight hard and drag as much attention as you can. Make it loud. If he's watching, I want him focused on you. That'll give us a chance to get in close."

"And when we do, it's game over."
