Chapter 213: Ambush
The clearing was still. The only sounds were the heavy breaths of the knights, exhausted after hours of travel and relentless battles. The dense canopy of the Heartwood Forest loomed over them, blocking out much of the sun, casting eerie shadows across the open ground where they had decided to rest.
But then—
A deep, guttural growl rumbled from the darkness beyond the trees.
It was low at first, almost a vibration in the air. Then it was joined by another. And another. The sound built into a crescendo of heavy, raspy breathing, the unmistakable presence of something massive.
Then came the first thud.
A tree near the edge of the clearing shuddered, its leaves trembling as something massive pushed through the undergrowth. The knights immediately tensed, hands flying to their weapons.
Then it stepped out.
A hulking ogre, its body unlike anything they had ever seen.
Its flesh was blackened and cracked, as if burnt and then fused back together with raw demonic energy. Pulsating red veins ran across its skin, glowing ominously with every heavy breath it took. Its eyes—hellish crimson pits—locked onto the knights with a savage hunger.
Then more of them emerged.
One by one, from every direction, thirty of them.
Each ogre was at least three meters tall, their bulging muscles layered with thick demonic hide, making them look like walking disasters of brute force. Their claws twitched, their jagged fangs gnashing together as if they could already taste flesh.
For a moment, the knights stood frozen, taking in the sheer nightmarish sight of these abominations.
Then—
"FORMATION!" Captain Raoul roared.
The knights snapped out of their daze and immediately fell into battle positions, forming a semi-circle with shields raised, their swords and spears glowing faintly with aura.
The first ogre attacked.
It moved with terrifying speed, far faster than its massive frame should allow, swinging a mace the size of a carriage wheel at the front line of knights.
BOOM!
The ground cracked beneath the impact as three knights barely jumped back in time, the sheer shockwave knocking them off their feet.
But Raoul was faster.
SHING!
His sword flashed, a streak of silver cutting through the air as he sliced into the ogre's side. The force of the aura-infused strike ripped through flesh, sending black blood splattering onto the ground.
The ogre let out a horrifying roar, staggering from the wound.
